Mickey Duff said that the only fighter he ever feared was Roberto Duran, he laid off the drink and drugs in preparation for this fight and pulled off the Ring 'upset of the year' 1982.
Laing showed so much natural ability against an ill prepared Duran. So talented.

A good friend of mine, Joe Ryan, was his trainer for many years, and guided him through that night against Duran.
Joe always said that Kirkland only lived up to a small fraction of his potential and if he had stayed off the drugs and actually bothered to train regularly rather than just when he was desperate for money then he could have been one of the greatest boxers of all time.
